I think you mean your Wireless Router can do 54mbps (megabits per second) and not your Internet Connection.

The speed of the connection between you/your router will only really affect transfers between computers on your own network.

Unless your internet connection is very fast, its very unlikely that you will achieve
54mbps connectivity with JUST the internet.

Can you do better? what you have at the moment (WirelessG) is probably still the most used type of wireless. there is a newer one (WirelessN), im not sure if its been completely standardised yet, and it does cost quite a bit more than WirelessG.

To upgrade would require a new router, and new wireless cards for all the computers connecting to it.

54 mbps is the highest data rate achievable on current wireless networks (802.3g and 802.3n). Some manufacturers have proprietary extensions that double this data rate if both ends of the connection (computer and WiFi router) are from the same manufacturer. However, this is about as good as you are likely to get with ordinary consumer equipment. It is probably also significantly faster than your internet connection - the data rate from the router to your ISP. That is probably the bottleneck in your connection to the Net.

54 mbps means that the maximum speed your wireless modem can transmit is 54 mbps. However, I don't think that there is any place in the world where you can get that fast of an internet connection from your ISP (unless this is for a large business). Home internet connections are usually around 4-10 mbps. So no worries, whatever plan you chose to get with your local ISP (internet service provider ex: Verizon) it won't be too fast for your wireless modem to handle.
