  • In the resurrection, there will be no marriages performed. That is an ordinance that must be performed in mortality. If it is performed under the authority such that "whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven" (http://scriptures.lds.org/matt/16/19, http://scriptures.lds.org/matt/18/18), then the marriage is bound in heaven. For those that didn't have the opportunity to have their marriages sealed in this life, we do the ordinances on their behalf so that they will be in effect when the resurrection occurs.
  • Mormans have their own Bible. Jesus meant exactly what HE said.
  • "Elder James E. Talmage writes: “The Lord’s meaning was clear, that in the resurrected state there can be no question among the seven brothers as to whose wife for eternity the woman shall be, since all except the first had married her for the duration of mortal life only. … In the resurrection there will be no marrying nor giving in marriage; for all questions of marital status must be settled before that time, under the authority of the Holy Priesthood, which holds the power to seal in marriage for both time and eternity” (Jesus the Christ, Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Co., 1982, p. 509)." quoted by Spencer W. • okay, since you are Mormon, where does the custom of "sealing themselves to spouses" come from.? and how do they do this? i am only curious, not trying to be negative in any way.
  • first of all you need to understand there are two kinds of marriages spoken of in the bible. 1. Eternal Marriage, and 2. Civil Marriage, or till death do you part. Let's look at the very first Marriage performed in the bible. Who performed it? God. Who were they? Adam and Eve. At what point were they married, before or after they partook of the forbidden fruit? Before. So why does that make a difference? It doesn't except it helps to show what kind of marriage this was. If Adam and Eve had not partaken of the forbidden fruit, how long would their marriage have lasted? Forever! In that state they could not die. So that is one kind of marriege. The other (Civil) is a little more difficult to show. But let's look at Matt.19;11..Here Jesus has just explained to his disciples that when a man put away his wife and she goes and marries another she has committed Adultry. The reason is because they were married for eternity and only divorced Civilly. Therefore she is still sealed to her husband and if she marry's another man Civilly she has committed Adultry. And if the husband marry's a woman who has been divorced who is also sealed to her husband causes her to commit adultry. However his disciples make the statement, in verse 10.."If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry." Then in verse 11, Jesus reply's "But he said unto them, ALL MEN CANNOT RECEIVE THIS SAYING, SAVE THEY TO WHOM IT IS GIVEN. This shows there are two kinds of marriages. We know one is Eternal if it is Bound on earth as it is Bound in heaven. The other is "till death do you part". God Himself said "What God hath joined together, let not man put asunder." "Divorce" and "till death do you part" is all Civil in nature and cannot and will not effect Eternal Marriages...whew4
  • Use your brain! ALL this stuff is IMAGERY, METAPHOR! How can you even THINK that it's literally real????
  • TO ANON: because they want to,they believe in an afterlife,in marriagetogether, after resurrection ,together, which Jesus "rebukes" also...a goup(Sadducees ,who did not believe in a resurrection) approaches Jesus with the same question of a woman who has had 7 brothers in marriage ,one at a time as Law required of a widow with brothers remaining to carry on name... but this was not the real question..they were trying to catch Jesus in error of Scripture because they did not believe in a resurrection! as Mormon's choose to believe they will know their spouses in Heaven and can "seal theirselves together" Jesus knew how they believed and HE set them straight,"You are in error, because you do not know the SCRIPTURES and the POWER OF GOD."WHEN THE DEAD RISE"(THEY DID NOT BELIEVE IN THE RISE)they will neither marry nor be given in marriage, they will be as angels in heaven..(this is God's view ). Jesus turns away and tells HIS disciple's.."In the account of the burning bush,God said to Moses,I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob,(who are dead now..but will rise)NOT the God of the dead, impossible,BUT THE GOD OF THE LIVING.." and HE told these Sadduces they were badly mistaken.. as HE would any who believe that they will know and be married to their spouses...God knows, it will not be Paradise if u have angels having spouses... its pretty clear in Scripture and pretty clear man has always made "their own"scripture....so, anon..u have good reasoning of Scripture...may God continue to Bless us both...is my reasoning:)justme
  • Actually, the Bible doesn’t say that; it says that the *Sadducees* — or more generally, “the children of this world” — “neither marry, nor are given in marriage.” Check it out: http://scriptures.lds.org/en/matt/22/24-25,30#23 http://scriptures.lds.org/en/luke/20/34-35#27 Admittedly, Mark’s record omits the identity of the individuals in this hypothetical scenario, so it’s not quite as clear there, but he still points out that Christ’s audience is a group that denies the resurrection: http://scriptures.lds.org/en/mark/12/18,25#18 HTH!
  • Only those who are resurrected do not marry. Any couples who are married and survive Armageddon will remain married...for a long time...because they have been granted a life without death...on the earth... (Revelation 21:4) And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.” This promise can only benefit those who are living...
  • If you know LDS doctrine they play by their rules.
  • a vow is a vow..the first is binding on this earth in God's eyes...u can have as many as u decide..by divorce, 2 or 3 at one time,it does not matter!!!the first.....good greif...look at Jacob...Leah and Rachel....and their servants...look who was buried with him though!!look where the messianic tribe and the priestly tribe came from??God recognizes 1,til death do u part...polygamy was not practiced by NT times....GOD had "civilized" the people ,morally, ethnically, etc... no matter how they want to rephrase ,rewrite, Jacob/Israel was a PRIME EXAMPLE, what 2 wives do to each other and all the trouble it caused ....Jacob was the PROMISE COVENANT with God, but no means perfect, he was quite a "shallow" man.as had to have Rachels beauty and she turned out to be a "thorn in his side"..he made a "conditional" pact with GOD..he deceived his father ,withe his mothers help, split the family but they never saw another again..we can learn alot from them ....but the Messiah came down and God's Plan was Accomplished..there is no need for sealing...those vows are sacred ,for life ,and God will not "overlook" broken ones....as Jesus said to the woman , u only have one husband and that was the first one..and there is no need of marriage in heaven...many faithful spouses will be there many unfaithful will not...and husband or wife, one cannot save the other...we can only save "ourself"....:)justme
  • In case anyone is still reading, a positive (though possibly speculative) case can be made that male-female relationships similar to marital bonds can continue between the redeemed into the next life. This may then also imply a romantic, physical or even sexual aspect in such a relationship. Below are some websites that make this positive case (across Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Protestant strands of Christianity). Each website does deal with the marriage pericope of Mt 22 to a lesser or greater degree - 1. http://rezfamilies.googlepages.com 2. http://www.ewtn.org/library/Marriage/zmarrheavn.htm 3. http://books.google.com.au/books?hl=en&id=YSSCUO1tonkC&dq=meyendorff+marriage%20&printsec=frontcover&source=web&ots=5NSzvkqo5M&sig%20=hBJchN5_JtqohBFEy0xFHYABFJI#PPA15,M1 Whether you find these arguments convincing is ultimately up to you. PS. please note according to historic Christian doctrine, the next life involves the resurrection, which is physical in nature, and is not to be identified with "heaven" (where the redeemed go after death to await future physical resurrection of their bodies) - please see this link for more explanation - http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1710844,00.html
  • We believe that this was a certain case for a woman in the New Testament and not a declaration that we can't marry forever. One must be careful to look at the context of a scripture. Otherwise, misinterpretation can cause one to misunderstand what the Lord has revealed and stated. We believe that the power to "bind on earth and bind in Heaven" that was given to Elijah and Peter gave them the right to seal couples for eternity. We believe that this power has been restored today. You can go to mormon.org and ask representatives questions of the LDS Church your questions.
  • To be resurrected, which means...a standing up... you must first die. Death ends marriage. So even if two people are resurrected back to the surface of the earth, in the flesh, having been given fresh bodies, the marriage is over. So two people now married cannot retain that marriage...There is the possibility that both could REMARRY in God's new system. (Revelation 20:12-13) And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and scrolls were opened. But another scroll was opened; it is the scroll of life. And the dead were judged out of those things written in the scrolls according to their deeds. 13 And the sea gave up those dead in it, and death and Ha′des gave up those dead in them, and they were judged individually according to their deeds. But our bad deeds have been paid for by our death... (Romans 6:23) For the wages sin pays is death, but the gift God gives is everlasting life by Christ Jesus our Lord. So we are judged on our reaction, our response, to being resurrected...if we agree to what God wants, we live...if not, we are eliminated for good...what the Bible terms...the second death... and for those few who have a heavenly future...the 144,000, it is a spiritual life and future...and there is no marriage in heaven...because marriage is basically a physical arrangement... (1 Corinthians 15:50) However, this I say, brothers, that flesh and blood cannot inherit God’s kingdom, neither does corruption inherit incorruption. Sadly, the Mormon faith does not study the Bible...only the book of Mormon,
  • Because Mormon beliefs where create by a power seeking man, not Almighty God..therefore Mormon teaching severly contradicts with what is written in Old and New Testament Scripture..They will try to do the excuse dance and tell you"you just dont understand" or my all time favorite "I know it looks like a contradiction on the surface, but that is only because your faith is not strong enough"..YES BLAME THE CULT VICTIM!!!..
  • This is an ordinance that has to be done in this life, but once done with authority from God is good for all eternity. For those who have died without it, it can be done by the living acting as proxy. In the resurrection they cannot do it for themselves.
  • because they make up their own rules as they go. there isn't anything about "sealing"[ themselves in the bible. but you know i think they might have even wrote their own damn bible too or what ever they call it. if you read the bible keep on reading it and dont even turn your head towards those mormons they are manmade
  • We must believe what the bible says...after all it IS God's word to us. But that does not stop us using our commonsense. Basics...only 144,000 have a heavenly future...chosen to act as kings and priests and assist Jesus with the judgement. All these ones have to die to be in heaven. They will not marry or maintain their marriages because they have become spiritual, having no fleshly bodies. These ones were called by Jesus his " little flock" Then we have the all the others.good and bad.....Those that die before Armageddon will be resurrected...not to heaven, but back to the earth...Revelation 20; 12,13 and will be judged on how they react to being in God's new system...If they then comply, they will be included in the "great crowd"...those that do not comply will sadly be eliminated...they had their second chance. Rev. 7;9 Those that are judged worthy will live on...on the earth...without death or sickness...Rev.21;4...and because they HAVE died previously, their marriages are null and void... But a small group will also remain...having not seen death at all...they have lived THROUGH Armageddon, being fully approved by God and his son, and will also live on...on the earth...also without death...and if any of these are married...will stay married...forever... Three separate groups... The scripture points mainly to the little flock...
  • Precisely BECAUSE "in the resurrection neither do men marry nor are women given in marriage." Marriage, must take place BEFORE the resurrection. And if it is to endure beyond this life it must be done by authority from God.
  • This question has been hashed over many times. And those who believe marriage is NOT continued in heaven still believe the same after all is said and done. Perhaps I could add something you have not considered. Who married Adam and Eve? Can you show me where the Bible says "till death do you part?" Remember they were married by God before they fell, so is they had not fallen, how long would they have been married? And remember the putting away the wife by a writing of Divorce, didn't happen until Moses came along some 1400 years later. But what does the Bible say?..Matt.19;3-8.."The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? 4 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, 5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? 6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. 7 They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away? 8 He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: BUT FROM THE BEGINNING IT WAS NOT SO. In Acts 17;28,29..we read.."For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring. 29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device." If we are the offspring of God would that not indicate that God also has a wife? Think about that for a bit. Later
  • Too me, these scriptures do not support marriage in Heaven. Also with that view, it would make one think that God would have polygamy in heaven with brother inlaw marriage. It would also create a question for those that teach this as that could be a problem for those that were under the Mosaic Law of brother-in-law marriage. Jesus clarified it though. Romans 7:2 For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to [her] husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of [her] husband. Matt 22:30 for in the resurrection neither do men marry nor are women given in marriage, but are as angels in heaven Luke 20:35 but those who have been counted worthy of gaining that system of things and the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage. 1Cor 7:39-40 A wife is bound during all the time her husband is alive. But if her husband should fall asleep [in death], she is free to be married to whom she wants, only in [the] Lord. 40 But she is happier if she remains as she is, according to my opinion. I certainly think I also have God’s spirit. Matthew 22:23-33 On that day Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came up to him and asked him: 24 “Teacher, Moses said, ‘If any man dies without having children, his brother must take his wife in marriage and raise up offspring for his brother.’ 25 Now there were seven brothers with us; and the first married and deceased, and, not having offspring, he left his wife for his brother. 26 It went the same way also with the second and the third, until through all seven. 27 Last of all the woman died. 28 Consequently, in the resurrection, to which of the seven will she be wife? For they all got her.” 29 In reply Jesus said to them: “YOU are mistaken, because YOU know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God; 30 for in the resurrection neither do men marry nor are women given in marriage, but are as angels in heaven. 31 As regards the resurrection of the dead, did YOU not read what was spoken to YOU by God, saying, 32 ‘I am the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob’? He is the God, not of the dead, but of the living.” 33 On hearing [that], the crowds were astounded at his teaching.
  • because the mormons don't so much respect the bible as they do their mormon book.
