Cyndi's List is an excellent source that no one has mentioned yet. Http://www.cyndislist.com Cyndi's List is a comprehensive genelaogical website that not only provides over 1000 links to various genealogical websites and databases, but explains in detail basic genealogical methods for researching your family tree. Another excellent source is as follows: http://www.genforum.com It's an online, FREE forum, where you can discuss genelaogical issues and post questions and answers about your family and learn about other ancestors. Then, then there's rootsweb.com. Rootsweb.com provides family trees that have been submitted by its members and it's also FREE to use. Keep in mind; however, that these family trees are NOT always well-documented, so you must be careful anytime you're perusing online websites for family trees because many of them contain mistakes. I hope this helps & welcome to the wonderful world of genealogy! Please note: These are ALL free websites. GenForum and Cyndi's List do not cost anything to use, rootsweb.com does cost for certain features; however.

All of the sites mentioned above are good. There are also the sites FreeBMD FreeCen and FreeReg, which are trying to put the British Births Marriages and Deaths, the Censuses and the Registers up online. The Free BMD is pretty good, but the others have only patchy coverage so far. When they have more input, the amount of info will be great, theoretically rivalling Familysearch.org. One thing about familysearch.org. There are some big flaws in the information uploaded. Most of the earliest stuff was done by well meaning but not always accurate transcribers. There are many mistakes, so be careful not to take anything as verbatim without backing it up with access to the original docs. I have just been working on one of my lines, the Langtons of Langton by Partney Lincolnshire, and a group of us seem to have established an accurate pedigree for the family. The information on the familysearch.org site, however, uses a flawed pedigree, which we had access to originally as well (and confused us like blazes!), and has not consulted Burke's Landed Gentry, which is much more accurate. Because this was formulated as an LDS site, the information was originally put in by adherents tracing their own lines (for religious reasons), and who included family histories and stories with none or not much verification. The site is improving, but there is still a lot of stuff on there that needs fixing. The same goes for the many private genealogies printed online. Some are excellent, some not so. I found one which confused some of my ancestor's siblings with another family of the same surname. I wrote to the owner, but he has not replied. Oh, two other good sites for nobility and gentry are tudorplace.com.ar and stirnet.com They mostly agree, but differ on some details. Each has documentation, though, so you can check. Happy hunting.

http://www.familysearch.org is a great free site and is going to continue to get bigger and better over the next few years. http://www.cyndislist.com has tens of thousands of links to lots of great websites, most of them free, and is a good place to start. http://www.findagrave.com is perfect if you're looking for the grave of someone who was buried in the United States and is also free Hope that helps, genealogist84 -- http://www.familypulse.org

I have put up two websites too start answering these questions, more will follow (for example free searching in the US) but i have included some listed below as well: The Church of the Latter Day Saints (LDS) - The church have an extensive set of records relating to most countries, and specifically to the U.S. that they have gathered from churches and parishes. Much of this is available for free at http://www.familysearch.org. They have birth, marriage and death records, copies of the censuses available, all for FREE! However you may find at times some information is missing, and sometimes you will be informed that there is a record available but it hasn't been transcribed, in which case you will have to ask them to provide a copy. This can be done by visiting the local LDS center, but this is all explained on their website. Cindy's List - http://www.cyndislist.com/ - A huge resource of information, broken down by state and counties, with literally thousands of links. The only issue with this is, it can be quite difficult to navigate, and you can spend hours trying to find everything!!! However if you dont want to spend money, you are going to have to spend more of your time searching! Rootsweb - World Connect Project - You can put in your ancestors name in the search for and it will check millions of existing records for the name. HeritageQuest Online - Usually only available via subscription, but your local library may have access for free. Includes census and other key information. Interment.net - Free Cemetery Records Online - Two million records taken from literally thousands of cemeteries across the globe. US Genweb - The original and biggest resource for US genealogy. Ancestry.com - Offer a free 14 day trial USGenWeb Archives - This is the link to the search engine that will search through every single US record without having to visit each states site, absolutely invaluable. Well hidden so under used by most people. US Social Security Death Index - Easy to access database, the SSDI has 64 million records of people who have died after 1962. Searches return birth date, death date, residence and inheritor. Ellis Island Records - Nearly half of all American immigrants arrived through Ellis Island, New York. Theres is easy access to ships' passenger manifest records from 1892-1924. You can view and print out digital copies of the original manifests and photos of the ships. Illinois State Archives - Free databases available from the Illinois State Archives, includes marriage records. Castle Garden Online - Search by name and time period for immigrants who landed at Castle Garden (1830 - 1890). Geneanet - The database has 85 million names taken from free Web sites around the world. Michigan Genealogical Death Indexing System - 170,000+ Michigan death records from 1867 this free genealogy resource index death records upto 1897 Kentucky Vital Records - The Kentucky Office of Vital Statistics in conjunction with the University of Kentucky have transcribed 3 million state vital records for Kentucky. Utah Census Search - Free search tool for the Utah federal census - 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880. GenCircles - Global Tree - A popular place for searching and submitting family trees using GEDCOM files. Over 32 million surnames can be searched and cross matching of other trees is possible. Obituary Central - If you need death records for the U.S. or Canada, then the search tools will make things easy. Pennsylvania Digital Archives - The Pennsylvania Archives Records Information Access System have over 600,000 records digitized. Maryland State Archives - Free Genealogy Indexes - Maryland State Archives site has lots of great info on it.
