  • "English" is how hard you shoot the cue ball. When someone says, you used a little too much English, it means you hit the cue ball. When they say you didn't use enough English, it means that you didn't shoot the cue ball hard enough. I don't know how that word came around though.
  • "English" is the word the Americans use for putting spin on the ball... left English is putting a left spin on the cueball by striking it on the left of centre. This will have the effect of making the cueball ricochet further to the left after contact with the object ball than it would normally do. You must remember to adjust the line you are aiming on to take the English into account, since striking the left side of the cueball will throw the line of your aim slightly further to the right than normal - it is for this reason that potting balls with English is difficult, because the aiming is hard to judge correctly... actually applying English of some sort to the cueball is fairly easy, assuming you chalk you cue properly!
