  • It really depends on how he finishes, in all the races. Take Tony Stewart (my driver)(#20 Home Depot) he was 11th in the point standing last year (2006) BUT, he brought home $7,285,280. The NEXTEL NASCAR SERIES CHAMPION of 2006 Jimmie Johnson (#48 Lowes) brought home $8,909,140. For an example: See here is the TOP TEN DRIVERS and what they made last year....Just goes to show HOW WELL THEY DO ON THE TRACK! 1.) JIMMIE JOHNSON (#48 Lowes) $8,909,140. 2.) MATT KENSETH (#17 Dewalt) $6,608,920. 3.) DENNY HAMLIN (#11 Fed EX) $4,389,220. (Denny WAS ROOKIE OF THE YEAR ALSO!) 4.) KEVIN HARVICK (#29 GM GOODWRENCH) $6,201,580. (Kevin has a differnet sponsor this year, SHELL/PENZOIL) 5.) DALE EARNHARDT JR. (#8 Budweiser) $5,466,100. 6.) JEFF GORDON (#24 Dupont) $5,975,870. 7.) JEFF BURTON (#31 Cingular wireless)$5,008,880. 8.) KASEY KAHNE (#9 DODGE DEALERS/UAW DODGE) $6,204,220. 9.) MARK MARTIN (#6 AAA) $4,282,550. (Mark is in a different car, sponsor, & team this year 2007, look for him in the #01 US Army) 10.) Kyle Busch (#5 Kellogs) $4,821,090. See, EVEN the 10th place finisher Kyle Busch made more than 9th (Mark Martin) or even 3rd place (Denny Hamlin)...and Denny won rookie of the year. The amount these drivers made was found on: http://www.nascar.com/races/cup/2006/data/standings_offical.thml.
  • Gina's right, it does vary. However, you really can't go by the winnings that are credited to each driver. Drivers who don't own their own teams (and there aren't very many who do) are actually contracted employees of the teams they drive for. The terms of each driver's contract are the result of rather long and involved negotiations between the driver and the team owner (although it's generally agents and lawyers representing the driver and owner who do the actual negotiating). Consequently, each driver's contract is different, but generally, a driver is paid a base salary, a percentage of the winnings and usually some bonuses for achieving certain levels of performance (such as making the Chase). Contract details are closely guarded secrets, but it's safe to say that "star power" drivers like Tony Stewart, Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. get sweeter deals than guys like Dave Blaney, Brian Vickers and Joe Nemechek.
  • That questions was asked to Jeff Gordon on Wind Tunnel, the salaries are according to their contracts and the funds they receive from the sponsors.
