  • You may want to look at going to work for a wholesaler who supplies women's stores. It could give you insight on what is being purchased for what price. There is a lot "tech" on retail, especially women's apparel. Going to work at a retailer similiar to what you envision for your own store will certainly give you insight. I am in the Dallas area and have seen the industry change quite a bit. I suggest trying something that approximates what you want to do. It is the mistakes that are costly and you can learn from the mistakes of others. By the way, try to buy used fixtures, rather than new, when you start up. That will save you a lot.
  • my friend was in your position 2 years ago, then he landed a job as purchaser for sears. he was convinced this would not help him much because he thought he had to actually work in the front of the store talking to customers in order to gain experience. he now says its the other way around. try and find a numbers job for the retailers so it gives you experience in inventory cycles, costs and markups, and different computer systems which would be of great help when you start your own business.
