Help answer this question below.
Speed class determines the transfer speed for each variety of card. Transfer speed refers to the amount of information that can be transferred to the card in a single second, analogous to the miles-per-gallon for a car.
The Class 2 is the slowest speed class with a minimum transfer speed of 2 mega bytes per second. The Class 4 is twice as fast with a minimum transfer speed of 4 mega bytes per second.
Depending on the kind of information you will be transferring you may want a faster card. If you have a digital camera and you want to use the burst mode feature, which allows you to shoot a rapid series of continuous shots, a higher-class SD card can allow you to shoot longer while in this mode.
Class number does not necessarily determine the speed. The class number determines the minimum transfer rate that an SD card is capable of. The SD class system is managed by the SD Card Association who provide performance testing to manufacturers who want to have the logo and speed certifications on their SD cards. However, SD cards tend to under- and over-perform depending on the manufacturer. Class 6 cards have been found with transfer rates between 3.6 mega bytes per second and 18.5 mega bytes per second.
Primarily, higher speed SD cards are good when dealing with higher quantities of information, such as high-resolution photos or video. Higher Class SD cards are also helpful when it comes to transferring information from the SD card to the computer because they reduce the transfer time.
