Essentially the same as a Machine Gun, a Chain Gun is also a breech-loading gun. Unlike Machine Guns, Chain Guns are always belt-fed. Chain Guns use slightly more powerful rounds and are used primarily to target armored vehicles. Chain Guns are self-loading and do not require an external loader. Chain-Guns are capable of Spreadfire.

The salient feature of a chain gun is that it has an external power source. Most guns operate on their own using "blow-back" or pistons. No, not really. Chain guns and machineguns are two different types of weapons. For example, if a cartridge doesn't fire in a machinegun, the firing stops until the misfired round can be manually cleared. With a chaingun, the dead round is just ejected by the external drive like any other casing, and firing continues. That in itself puts the two weapon classes apart in a very signifcant way. "Chain Gun" is a registered trademark of Alliant Techsystems Inc. We do NOT make multi-barrel (gatling design) guns, so there's your answer. Just because Doom and Wolfenstein call a MINI-GUN and chain gun don't make it so, you nerds. ATK's Bushmaster series and M230 series SINGLE-BARREL cannons are the only true "chain guns", and unlike a machine gun, they are capable of first-round-select, are immune to mis-fires, and rate-of-fire is adjustable.
