Manufacturers of tankless water heaters tout the units' on-demand heated water as a source of savings for its owner. Traditional storage water heaters must continually heat the water in their tanks to offset standby heat loss. Conversely, tankless water heaters only heat water when the hot water valve is opened, translating into monetary savings through energy efficiency.
Like everything else, the technology behind storage water heaters has advanced in recent years. The energy-efficient gas-powered models of today are more cost effective than those produced a decade ago. Since the hookups are still the same, a homeowner can realize a savings in overall energy costs for a relatively low initial investment.
The idea of a tankless water heater makes sense, but the costs involved makes the investment senseless. Consumer Reports tests showed a meager annual savings of about $75 over traditional water heaters. Minimal savings and high upfront costs means that tankless water heaters cost more.
