Is it true that the novels or literature society reads in todays modern era is not quite up to par as the original novels or literature in the old days(1600-19230)?

It just seems that way. There was good writing and bad writing hundreds of years ago, but only the good writing has survived in print, so it seems as if there was a lot of great literature back then. But there is a lot of great literature being written today as well. It's just harder to find because you don't have hundreds of years of filtering to rely on to get rid of the crap.
