Regarding leather, "sunlight is a natural bleaching agent," according to the MitchellGold+BobWilliams.com. Keeping the leather well-oiled and exposed to constant sunlight or other UV rays will lighten the leather after a couple of weeks. Applying diluted bleach will also lighten shoe leather.
Leather kept in direct sunlight will become cracked and damaged, since sunlight dries out the leather. Even applying oil may not eliminate the risk of damage. The alternative to sunlight--bleach--is even more destructive to the leather shoes.
It is possible to bleach the color out of your shoes, but the positive of having lighter-colored shoes is offset by damage to the leather. It is easier, though more expensive, to simply buy another pair of shoes rather than risk destruction of the darker pair.
