A study conducted in 2002 found that Crest Professional Whitestrips were very effective in whitening teeth even with severe stains. The study reported that "the strip group averaged a 66 percent greater shade improvement overall compared to the tray control group." No major adverse effects resulted from treatment. Additionally, "Consumer Reports" found that another brand of Crest whitening strips-Crest Whitestrips Supreme-was the most effective out of eight brands tested.
The successful use of Crest whitening strips depends a great deal on compliance, as the recommended course of treatment typically lasts for 12 to 18 months. Though no patients left the 2002 study due to adverse events, "('Consumer Reports') testers did complain of tooth sensitivity to temperature and gum irritation." Crest whitening strips may not cause dramatic changes, and proper dental care and the avoidance of certain food and substances, including coffee and cigarettes, is still necessary to maintain whiteness.
Crest whitening strips have been proven to work, but there are some minor drawbacks to their use. They are much cheaper than whitening in the dentist's office. Consult your dentist if you are seeking advice on whitening your teeth.
