DVD-R discs are supported by all DVD players and can be used to burn up to about 5 gigabytes of available space.
DVD+R discs are more recent than DVD-R discs. In 2003, DVD+R demonstrated that it could double its capacity by adding another recordable layer within the DVD.
DVD-R is generally used to burn DVDs. It's approved by the DVD Forum, an international association of hardware manufacturers, software firms and content providers. DVD+R was made to start a format in which a user could rewrite over a DVD. A DVD+R uses a system referred to as AdIP (Address in Pregroove) to help reduce error and interruptions when burning the disc. DVD-R does not have that.
Both DVD-Rs and DVD+Rs have the same amount of space in single and double layer discs. DVD+R and DVD-R both do the same thing. There isn't really a difference other than the plus/minus sign that a person would notice.
A note to those buying DVDs to burn. DVD players made before 2003 do not play DVD+Rs because they were not made before then. Players made afterward do, though.
