What ever you do DO NOT TAKE OUT THE BAR!!!! If you take out the bar the infection will seal up inside your tongue and become much worse!

Mine became infected after having it for 5 years because I increased my guage without soaking the bar. My tongue swelled again and became sore and my throat down into my neck became painful. I rinsed my mouth with warm salt water atleast 3 times a day, moving the bar up and down to insure that the water went through the hole, and then lifted my tongue up to allow any pus to escape. Thats all you can do. IF it becomes so painful that you can not swollow or talk - go back to your piercer and ask what they think you should do.

As we speak my tounge is infected, it sucks, and the symptoms are as the first person told you, but the 2nd person is right as well. You should trying cleaning it out with warm salt water 3 times a day and if you feel it necessary go back to cleaning it the way you did when you first got it pierced. In my case that was watered down listerine after everything i ate or drank that wasn't water. If you do all these things, and you notice that the infection is not going away you should go to the doctor and ask them what you should do. At this point you would have already done everything the piercer would have told you, and it's time to go to the doctor. Then take the doctors orders from there.

I hope this helped you out :)

I got my tongue pierced 8 days ago and I had swelling for the first 4-5 days but it was barely painful at all, the only pain i had was if i tried to speak to quickly or when i caught it on my teeth(that would hurt obviously)
Im still have no pain whatso ever and Im eating & talking perfectly well.
Im just extremely paranoid about infection, Im not sure if I have one or not.
There was whiteness on my tongue but i've been using a special mouthwash thats basically used to heal your tongue and keeps it clean & is working very well so I think.
There was a small indent around the ball on top and arounnd it was a sort of yellowy white colour which i didn't know how to get rid of so i pretty much was just brushing it alot and cleaning it. My tongue still goes white every now and again but its not very bad and the yellowy ring is slowly going so im not sure if it will go completely when my tongue has returned fully to its proper size and all swelling is gone.
But there is also a yellowy type of puss coming out both ends of the piercing, not loads just a little bit occasionly, but my friend has her tongue pierced and she said it was normal as she had it too. There is not always puss but when there is i tend to just wipe it off.
Im not sure if this is an infection or not because there is no abnormal swelling, just alittle bit of yellow/white around the outside of the ball but not an excessive amount. I have had no pain at all and still have no pain. MY tongue is slightly white but as it says on the comments above, could this be from where im cleaning it too much?

Does anyone have an advise for me?
Reply on this or email please
    iBecki@hotmail.com
    Cheers! xxx

i had a whitey yellow lump on my tongue and thought it was a infection so i just washed my mouth out with salt water about 4 times a day and it went in a bout 3 days so no worries even if you do get a infection just keep rinsin out with hot salt water make sure its from your kettle so its sterolised! or it could go worse.

i disagree with the advice above...with ANY infection ...GO TO THE DOCTOR! he will prescribe an antibiotic or something to clear up the infection. If the doctor suggests removing the jewelry...DO AS THE DR SAYS. You can always get it repierced later if needed but definetely go to the doctor and dont play around waiting to see if it will heal on its own,...infections do not heal on thier own and can cause serious complications of left untreated. the infection can get into your blood stream and release toxins all throughout your body.

I have had my tongue pierced for five years and it just became infected. I believe its from too much citrus fruit followed by too much listerine. I called the piercer and they said if you have your tongue pierced, you should never use listerine and should rinse with SEA SALT, not just table salt which was what I have been doing for the past two days. After rinsing with the sea salt just once it already feels better. You mix 1/4 of a teaspoon of sea salt with an 8oz glass of warm water, 2 minute intervals for about 15 minutes. If it does not feel better in a few days then you should absolutely go to the doctor.

IF YOU HAVE HAD YOUR PIERCING FOR OVER A MONTH THAT IS WHEN THE REAL SYMPTOMS START TO HAPPEN. SO THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE HAD IT FOR LIKE A WEEK AND HAVE WHAT MAY SEEM LIKE INFECTION SYMPTOMS LIKE SOURNESS,BLEEDING, PUSS, OR WHATEVER DON'T WORRY THAT HAPPENS TO ALMOST EVERYONE AND IT TAKES UP TO 2 WEEKS FOR YOU TONGUE TO HEAL. IT'S JUST YOUR TONGUE GETTING USED TO HAVING A BAR THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF IT. BUT IF YOU HAVE BUMPS ON YOUR TOUNGE ESPECIALLY THE BOTTOM THEY MAY BE WHAT ARE CALLED KELOIDES WHICH IS NOT INFECTION BUT REQUIRES YOU TO TAKE OUT YOU BARBELL IMMEDIATLY!!! I HAVE SOOOOOOO AUCH EXPERIENCE WITH TONGUE PIERCINGS I'VE BASICALLY BEEN THROUGH IT ALL SO I HOPE THIS INFO IS HELPING TO YOU. GOOD LUCK:)

Chelchelrea, it might just be scar tissue formed around the bottom of the tongue ring i had got mine done almost 3 weeks ago and and i have scar tissue aroudn the bottom of it (usually from playing with the ring while its healing) i showed my piercer and he told me to tie dental floss kinda tight around it to cut the cerculation of to the scar tissue and it should just fall of in like 5 days but! check with your piercer and make sure its not a keloid :) and i also have a white layer over my tongue its kinda gross ive been using scop and sea salt and water but i think it should go away

I got my tongue pieced 18 days ago. I just woke up and it was bleeding.. Not bad but i just rinsed my mouth out with alcohol free mouth wash. Also this past sunday ( today is thursday) i went to a tattoo/pierce shjop and bought a shorter barbell and the piercer assisted me in changin it out. But ever since it has been hurting slightly. I have no discharge or swelling but just mild occasional bleeding and some pain with discomfort. I also still have a noticable crater around the piece site. Can someone help me.

i got my tongue peircd on saturday afternoon , its now monday night. i was scared mine was infected before reading that last comment , which is nearly exactly what i have. my tongue didnt hurt to much when i first got it done , though it startd getting quite painful that night & the next morning i woke up & it was swolen , with dents from my teeth in it which didnt look very attractive at all. its still swolen now, and its white around the ball which is dented into my tongue also, but its not too painful & im guessing thatll all go away when the swelling goes down ? the thing that got me worried was that white stuff is oozing from the hole underneath , but i think its all okay. ive been eating little bits all day & not really cleaning my mouth out properly so imma try do a better job tomorow & hope everything goes smoothly .

i just got mine 4 days ago, and it's the same way :D
i was kinda scared to and i went to my piercer and she said that it was strange, but that she thought it was just where the ball was resting on my tongue. she thought it was strange because it wasn't very swollen, but she said that happens when it swells and that it probably was swollen during the night. :D Don't worry and congrats on the new piercing :D

its now monday and everything is still there... but now the left side of my neck kinda hurts...
i just realized that by lightly tapping on it a minute ago.
ive been freaking out alot since i got it done cause ive been thinknig that ill somehow get an infection...
but i honestly dont know what to do...
ive been rinsing alot with diluted alcohol free crest pro health and been careful eating or whatnot.
the very first day i started eating solid foods.. which was probably really stupid of me.
also, i keep smoking... ive cut down but he also said to rinse with water everytime i smoke or eat.
    i need help guys...

if your tongue is infectide dont worrie because i think mine was a few days after i got mine pierced and all i did was wash my mouth out with salt water 4 times a day and the yellow lump went from my tongue.
make sure you boil the water in the kettle first because it sterolisez the water.

I got my tongue pierced on Thursday and it's now Sunday. Here's what's happened so far.
On Thursday, the day I got it pierced, It hurt alot but it wasn't really that swollen and I was talking normally. My tongue was very tender and I couldn't eat anything but apple sauce and bottled water.
The next day, I woke up with a very swollen tongue and took three anti-inflamatory pills, (ibuprofen) It was fine that day, if tender and still a little swollen.
Yesterday It was swollen and I had a slight cut on the front of my tongue under the top ball. I think this came from talking and playing with the bar too much. I had an indentation under the ball, and the top of my tongue around the bar was starting to turn white. By the end of the day the pain was nearly gone, but my cut had become a round red blister.
This morning my mouth was dry and my tongue hurt, still swollen. There was a light opaque discharge forming in the dent at the top and draining from the hole at the bottom, but that's just fluid from the healing process (the stuff that would turn into a scab anywhere else on your body). I still don't want to eat solid food, because I'm afraid I'll tear my tongue more, but I'm not worried that it's infected anymore.
I think I'll try the sea salt idea. I rinse with an alcohol-free medical oral rinse.

I got my tongue pierced oct 3, 2010 and in the very beginning i did everything i was supposed to. Clean it, rinse it, not play with it. The swelling went down after about a week, but before that i didnt think my tongue was ever going to go back to normal size and i was gonna talk with a lisp forever. Haha of course that didnt happen. After about a month i got kicked out of my house for personal reason and couldnt keep up with brushing my teeth every morning and every night or rinsing my mouth out everytime i ate something. Now i have this little lump infront of the piercing, its white but not the whole lump just like the tip. And ive noticed that IN the lump it makes a sort of L shape. Meaning i can move the bar up thru the lump and a little to the right. Which i think that means it migrated? idk but its been going away little by little because after i got kicked out i played with it a lot but ive been good about not playing with it. Even tho it is extremely hard. I try to forget its even there to keep myself from playing with it. Everyone says not to use listerine, but my piercer said i could, and she never said to dilute it. Maybe thats the result of the lump? because the alcohol didnt let it heal quick enough? idk. Anyways. Its been like a month and a half and ive eaten wasabi peas by the handful and never felt like my tongue was irritated and it never swelled up again. Ive also had tapatio and valentina hot sauce by the shit load and all i felt was the normal burning of the tongue like before i even had my tongue pierced. I think the reason a lot of people are getting their tongue infected is because they research and most people say to eat ice cream and dairy when the piercer tells you OTHERWISE!!! Even tho people said they ate dairy and yeast with no problem doesnt mean the same for you. I was scared of getting an infection and having to end up getting my tongue removed ( xD ) so i stayed clear away from those things. I researched a shit ton before i got mine pierced and finally decided i was just scaring myself. But i had some white-ish stuff coming out the bottom of the piercing, but i just kept brushing my teeth and slowly and carefully removing it with my toothbrush. Its completely gone now so nothing to worry about. Its just the top of my tongue...i want the bump to go away :/ Ive also already changed my tongue ring to an acrylic one but i might go back to the long bar, to see if the bump goes away. Pain-wise, everyone is different i think because i honestly do not remember feeling any pain what-so-ever, probably a slight, slight, slight unnoticable pinch but nothing unbearable. I would get it pierced over and over again. Same with my septum, ive had that done for 3 months now and i felt no pain at all, just a slight little nudge when my piercer replaced the needle with the nose ring. I also dont remember my eyes watering when i got it done. Thats something i see a lot of people saying. But i want more piercings, nothing over board, just my ears, my chest, and maybe my hips. But i wanna get my ears gauged to 00, but idk if it would be harder to get hired with bigger holes in my ears than people are used to :/ But to wrap things up, If you just got your tongue pierced and its been less than a month, the things that are happening to your tongue are most likely NORMAL. And as for "craters" around the tongue ring...answer one question...have you gotten your tongue ring changed to a shorter barbell? relax its just the ball resting on your tongue and its making this crater. It should stop doing that after a while. :)

i got my tongue pierced Monday around 4ish. Now its Saturday and i was going to say i think i have a infection because i have yellow puss comming out around the top ball area, and if i press down on my tongue, more comes out. I also seen alot of people are saying stuff about puss, redness, and tongue being swollen. If it gets too bad, i say go to the doctor. The only thing is there's no way i'm taking my tongue piercing out. I just found out two days ago i have thrush, and my tongue was white. to test this, spit in a clear glass of water, if cotton-like balls form, you have thrush. if they don't, then you don't. the cotton-like balls are yeast. to treat this, gentail or gential violet, its a purple medicine used for babies with thrush. I've also been taking ibuprofen and fish mox, since the fish mox should kill any infection, and ibuprofen for the swelling. the swelling would go back and forth, but is okay now. my tongue is fine, but the area where the piercing is swollen and red. Redness, swelling, and puss are the top signs of infection.

How in the world would you let your tongue piercing get infected? You're suppose to take care of these kind of things. Take the thing out of your tongue and let it close. If the wound doesn't close and it starts eating your tongue away, you may have Narcotizing fasciitis (flesh eating bacteria).

I got my tongue pierced about a YEAR ago.. and for some reason it has swollen up.. it happened to me before a few months ago and i went back to the piercer and he said it was more then likely from something i ate (aka spicy food, allergic reaction, etc)...

It has happened again..i did eat shellfish and something spicy (which it has swollen from before, but i have done so before many times and nothing has happened....) it is very swollen, it hurts to move the bar bell up and down.. there's no redness or discharge. But this is a whole year later...
Can anybody tell me if it seems like an infection or if it just might be a reaction to a certain food...is it something I can fix myself?

Anyone who is experienced or knows anything about Tongue Peircings , please help!
I had my tongue peirced on monday, It didnt swell too much, but it was very painfull afterwards and throbbing, I couldnt talk, I was dribbling and I couldnt eat a thing!
Tuesday I woke up with it very swollen , swollen so much it was hard to swallow or close my mouth, I had teeth marks on the side of my tongue, and my mouth felt very dry, I tryed having some soup with was ok , but drank lots of ice cold water which really helped.
Its now thursday and Im getting a little bit better at eating food very carefully, such as mash and soup and small peices of bread!

I got my tongue pierced on Wednesday (4 days ago) and did everything i was told to do, Saturday morning it was bloody around the barbell on the underside of my tongue, after rinsing and cleaning it some yellowish stuff came out so i went to the doctors and he gave me some antibiotics. He also told me to take the barbell out but i refused because it cost lots. Now it only hurts on the one side and the swelling is going down. So i would recommend going to the doctor.
P.s. RINSING WITH SALT WATER DEFINITELY HELPS!
No kissing, smoking or drinking should be done.
