Generally, men do not wear thumb rings. Men may wear a few rings at most and this generally does not include one on the thumb. It is more common for females to wear thumb rings.
While in the past and even now thumb rings are not very common for men, fashion constantly changes. What was popular a few years ago is no longer popular, and new trends begin to be made. Trends start because people slowly decide to try something new and uncommon--this can include men wearing thumb rings.
If a man does or does not wear a thumb ring is up to him. Wearing a thumb ring can be a fashion statement or just somebody's preference. It is not unheard of or necessarily shocking for a man to wear a thumb ring--it is less common but does not really denote something about that man. If he is comfortable wearing a thumb ring, then he should wear one.

Since many years already, men are wearing thumb rings more and more. I think it's just fashionable, a kind of a trend. Some men who never wore a ring, suddenly started wearing a thumb ring, instead of one on a more traditional finger. Funny because a thumb is not quite the most convenient finger to wear a ring on because it is used so much. But anyway, to my opinion a (big) thumb ring looks good for men, and is very elegant in general for women.
I am wearing a thumbring quite often; it's a stainless steel one, and at least 10mm wide. Sometimes on my left hand, sometimes on the right. My former girlfriend wears rings on both thumbs, and we even bought partner rings together to wear on the thumb! That's how it started for me. Alas, the friendship is over.....
