  • The use of pointe in ballet is not to make the dancers taller but rather to give them the illusion of floating, gliding, even flying briefly which is why the male dancer support of the ballerina is so inportant in creating that illustion. The pointe shoes just add to it.

  • Pointeman was spot-on. I would just like to add: Initially, ballet dancers did not stand on their toes. They stood on the balls of their feet, much like one would to peer over a ledge. However, it looks much more graceful and completes the lines of the legs of the ballet dancer better if they are in pointe shoes. Pointe shoes are shaped aesthetically, so, like I said, they complete the lines of the leg, making it look more perfect.
