Newborn and young canaries require "nestling food" of soft seed and egg food. The soft seed can be boiled, sprouted or soaked in water. Eggs are also important for a baby canary diet; served either as a boiled egg mash or a dried whole egg.
Baby canaries also require some vegetation. A tablespoon-size slice of apple, boiled brown rice, cooked peas, ground corn or carrot shavings would all be sufficient for baby canaries. Most fruits or vegetables chopped small enough would be fine; however according to petalia.com.au, avocados may be toxic to canaries.
Baby canaries need a balanced diet of soft seed, egg food and vegetation at least during their first four weeks. Alternative nestling foods could include cream of wheat, soaked shredded wheat or rolled oats. The vegetative requirement in their diet (about 25 percent) continues into adulthood.
