According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 23.9 km sq (9.2 square miles). 14.9 km sq (5.8 mi sq) of it is land and 9.0 km sq (3.5 mi sq) of it (37.49%) is water.
It is a famous tourist attraction along the coast of Maine and is known for its scenic views and sunsets. It is mostly popular in summer and fall, due to the fact that during the winter the town shuts off the water to many of the outlying houses in the region owned solely as summer homes.
The downtown area is famous for its small and diverse range of shops, ranging from esoteric boutiques, to art galleries, to headshops and witchcraft stores.
Another classic trademark of Boothbay Harbor was "King" Brud, who sold hot dogs in the middle of the town from World War II until shortly before his death in February, 2006. His hot dog cart is currently on display at the Boothbay Railway Village.
