Lung function improves 30 percent in the first three months after quitting smoking. Within the first nine months, coughing and shortness of breath decrease. By the nine-month mark, the cilia--hairlike structures in the lungs--regrow, increasing the ability to clean the lungs, move mucus and fight infection.
The risk of death from lung cancer remains after quitting smoking, but decreases to about 50 percent that of a non-smoker after 10 years, according to the American Lung Association. Quitting smoking can slow the progression of emphysema but cannot reverse the damage already caused by the disease, which is caused by smoking in 90 percent of cases.
Quitting smoking dramatically improves lung function and risk of infection within the first few months. The risk of other serious lung afflictions, such as cancer and emphysema, also decrease but remain higher than that of a non-smoker.
