Correctly configured, a router should not slow down your Internet connection. Whether you are using WiFi or a LAN connection, your router is intended to enable a greater number of connections to your Internet. If the router is set up right, the Internet connection should pass through it to your computer without any slowdown in speed.
Beside enabling multiple computers to connect to the Internet, most routers are equipped with numerous other features and options that offer a great deal of control over how your Internet is delivered to connected computers. It is possible that these settings could be configured in such a way as to cause your Internet to run slower than if you had a direct connection to the modem.
Consult your router's owner's manual carefully when setting up the device. Changing any of the settings on your router without understanding exactly the effect that the settings will have could result in a slow down in your Internet connection. The best way to avoid issues is to simply connect your router with its factory settings intact.
