The National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC) provides help for people in financial trouble. The NFCC is a nonprofit organization and is America's oldest and largest credit counseling network. Counselors help consumers with debt problems to get control over their finances and ultimately to rebuild their credit.
Many credit counseling services that promote themselves as not-for-profit are not legitimate and actually charge their customers large upfront fees, according to the Federal Trade Commission. Watch out for firms that charge a high upfront or a high monthly fee for a credit counselor and that won't send you free information about their services without requiring you to give your personal financial information first or that are not interested in teaching you about money management skills.
To get credit help when you want to rebuild your credit, visit a reputable credit counseling firm such as the NFCC. Counselors there will advise you on how to manage your money and your debts. Learn how to develop a budget and learn of any services available to you. Reputable counselors are usually certified and trained in debt management, budgeting and consumer credit.
