Was Robert Smith, of the Cure, ever a member of the Banshees?

I have a Banshees live album: "Nocturne" and the picture of the guitarist on the back, if it isn't Robert Smith looks a lot like him! Given the amount of live guitarists they got through, I always assumed it was him.

Affirmative. He did join the Banshees briefly for tours in 1979 and 1982. and remained for the recording sessions for 1984's dark, atmospheric Hyaena album (touted by many music critics as their best album). He left soon after that to rejoin The Cure.
