  • A properly designed tank is made so it has maximum surface area for maximum gas exchange, maximum surface area also causes maximum evaporation. Add the agitation caused by aeration and filtration and evaporation increases. A major factor is the humidity in the room. In the witner your home heating drys the air, in summer your airconditioning drys the air. That increases evaporation. Some people with large "fishrooms have a room humidifier. The best way to slow evaporation is a snug fitting glass cover. A full cover is awkward to use at feeding time so best all around is a plastic cover with access hatches and a built in light. I myself use glass just because I happen to have easy access to a supply. I usually use three or four pieces in a row along the long dimension of the tank, I can lift one for feeding etc. I run a strip of plastic electrician's tape along the edges folded onto bothe sides to cover sharp edges. On the front edge I stick a piece of tape on one side let it stick out an inch or so then fold it back over itself and the other side of the glass as a handle.
