Because cloth, leather and vegetable fiber deteriorate, very little Anasazi Indian clothing has survived. Most of the things that have survived have been durable items, such as jewelry. Most researchers feel they wore little clothing. Men wore a breechcloth and sandals. Women wore short skirts or aprons. They wove these articles of clothing. During the summer, it was warm enough that they did not need clothes to keep warm. In the winter, they wrapped themselves in blankets and robes for warmth. The most common footwear was sandals made from Yucca fibers, and moccasins made from animal hides. During winter, they insulated sandals with fiber from juniper bark. Jewelry, made from material that did not deteriorate over time has survived. They used leather strips to string polished bone and rock together for necklaces, bracelets, earrings, pendants and other items. Around 750 A. D. they began to grow cotton. They used the cotton and animal hair, human hair, yucca and other fibers to weave. They made robes, blankets and articles of clothing to use during the cold weather to keep warm. They used natural dyes to color them. Most of the perishable material that has survived, leather and vegetable material, is found in caves where the temperature and humidity tend to be stable.Clothes
