Farmer poems are a primarily American adaptation of the much older pastoral poem of English tradition. They evoke images of country landscapes and the various activities of country farm life. A farmer poem is a poem that takes as its subject farms, farming or farmers. Farmer poems often describe crops, animals and the work involved in maintaining them. The farmer poem is an adaption of the much older pastoral poem (poetry about shepherding or pastureland), and it is most often referred to as "pastoral." It became popular within the American countryside. While many farmer poems aim to amuse or entertain, others deal more seriously with the struggles between man and nature or man and God through metaphor and striking natural imagery. Farmer poems are not restricted to describing only farms, animals or crops. A poem that meditates on any country landscape or close encounter with nature may be described as a farmer poem. American poet Robert Frost is celebrated for the pastoral quality of his writing, which includes images of farms, orchards and pastures, as in his poem "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening." Wendell Berry is also known for his farming themes, as in his collection "The Mad Farmer Poems."Definition
