Microsoft Visio is a leading vector-based graphics application used to create diagrams and charts. Some of the most common documents developed using Visio include flowcharts, organizational charts and process diagrams. Visio was initially developed by the Seattle-based Visio Corporation, initially founded in 1990 as the Axon Corporation and later known as Shapeware. Visio Corporation was acquired by Microsoft in a stock swap in 2000 and then folded into Microsoft's Business Productivity Group. Since its debut as a Microsoft product, Visio has primarily been released in two editions--Standard and Professional. The Standard edition is designed primarily for business users, while the Professional version includes additional tools designed to meet the needs of IT, engineering and software development professionals. Since its release as a Microsoft product, Visio has seen little in the way of challenges to its market position, so freeware applications comprise the few alternatives for users seeking to gain similar functionality from a non-Microsoft product. Although Visio is often branded as part of Microsoft's Office application suite, it has never been included in any version of Office. In early 2008, Microsoft announced it would be updating Visio to include the ribbon style of user interface first introduced in the Office 2007 versions of its Word, Excel and PowerPoint applications.
