The Hemi is an internal combustion engine that uses bowl-shaped or "hemispherical" combustion chambers to create greater airflow for better fuel/air mixture to generate more power. The Chrysler Corporation perfected the technology in the early 1950s. The first Hemi, a 20-horsepower, 2-cylinder engine, was developed by the Welch Motor Company of Chelsea, MI, in 1904, according to Allpar.com. Chrysler popularized the use of the Hemi in postwar cars. The Hemi helped spark the muscle car wars from the 1950s though the early 1970s as it continued to develop more horsepower on various models. The Hemi V-8 is considered the most technologically advanced engine and is standard equipment in many high-performance cars and dragsters. The "pent-roof" chambered version was developed by Peugeot in 1912 and used similar technology of the Welch Hemi. It was considered an improvement over the in bowl-shaped version. By 2005, the Hemi was used in the Dodge Ram pickup truck, the Charger, Challenger and SRT8. The 5.7-liter Hemi in the pickup boasts 345 horsepower. Although the Hemi is still used in Chrysler vehicles today, poor gas mileage --- 16 mpg in the city and 25 on the highway for the Challenger --- is responsible for its popularity dropping significantly by 2010.
