If I make 10x as much another person, should I be taxed 10x as many dollars?

• Paying the same percentage is paying my fair share. My gripe is that some people have to pay much more per dollar than others. That does not seem right to me.

• But the taxed percentage is much higher for higher incomes. Especially when you factor in State income tax. Do you think the percentage ought to be the same?

• Honestly Nate I do think it should be a flat tax rate straight across.
  I don't think it's far that the so called rich pay disproportionately higher tax rates with the wealthy in this country paying 95% of the nations taxes but that's just my opinion.

• The problem with a flat tax is that people barely making it(20-25%), will go without heat or food, where as the top(20-25%) will have to go without a home on the French Riviera or a personal jet.

• Strictly hypothetical... I created a company that supplies service contracts for integrated marketing strategies. For the first six years my wife and I struggled financially and I worked 80+ hours a week (most weeks). The business began to grow and after five more years of hard work (50-60 hour weeks) my company grew to make my family quite comfortable with minimal work (500K+ on a good year, 20 hours a week now that I hired a dynamite general manager).

• @ Nate - Based on your hypothetical scenario. Now that you're a wealthy business owner, your business is going to require people to run it. Many employees were likely educated at public schools, they take public roads to get to your facility, some may even take public transportation. Your facility consumes more public utilites and water to function than an average person's home and your faclilty is likely to have more of a police presence than the average residental neighborhood.
  Considering that you are consuming more of the public resources than the average person; my answer is yes, you should pay more taxes...

• But he is NOT consuming 90% of 'our' resources. And he DID work his a** off for years with hope being the biggest part of his paycheck. Shouldn't that be rewarded in America?

• All I'm saying is that he is using significantly more resources than the average working stiff; therefore, he should pay significanly more taxes.
  It's possible for someone to be sucessful and still pay their fair share of taxes...
