Spondylolisthesis is a condition of the spine in which a vertebra has slipped forward to impinge on another vertebra and the spinal cord. Grade 1 spondylolisthesis is the least severe form of slippage. Cases of spondylolisthesis are considered Grade 1 when 25 percent or less of the vertebra has moved out of place. The condition is usually associated with the lower back or lumbar area. Patients may be born with spondylolisthesis or develop it early in life, but it is much more often the result of prolonged physical or athletic activity. It can also be caused by trauma or the degenerative effects of aging. The most common symptoms of spondylolisthesis are chronic lower back pain during movement and limitation of range of motion. While more advanced cases may be easily visible on X-rays, subtler Grade 1 spondylolisthesis may require a CT or bone scan for diagnosis. Grade 1 spondylolisthesis may be managed with conservative treatment such as rest, limitation of activity and oral anti-inflammatory medication, though some cases can require a surgical procedure known as decompressive laminectomy.
