  • Yeah, it's a technique used to equalise the pressures between your ears and nosal sinuses, via the Eustachian canals. Divers use it a lot when descending to lower depths and hence higher pressures. Scubabob reliably informs me it's called valsalva (or something similarly spelt). However, it should not be done if the canal or ear is blocked for any reason, as this can cause damage to the tympanic membrane because the pressure cannot equalise correctly. So don't do it if you've just jammed a cotton bud into your ears.
