Plagiarism is often grounds for termination or dismissal when done in a professional setting.
In many educational instances, such as writing a paper for a class, plagiarism can cause a substantial mark-down in grade, or even a failing grade for the assignment or course. According to plagiarism.org, expulsion is sometimes a punishment at some higher-education establishments.
As of 1989, works do not need the copyright trademark symbol to be considered copyrighted. The act protects all works that include original ideas or information.
Fair Use, although not a simple set of rules to follow, helps to determine how much of an original work can be cited. In general, copying verbatim is not considered fair use, and neither is borrowing a great deal of information from the original work. Often, the effect on the original is also studied in plagiarism cases.
According to plagiarism.org, most cases are misdemeanors and carry fines from $100 to $50,000, and possible jail time. Some cases, however, are considered state and federal felonies, and may be punishable by up to 10 years in jail and up to $250,000 in fines.
