A PCMCIA network card is an external interface used to add local networking capabilities for a laptop. The card is a thick credit-card-size interface that connects directly to the laptop. A PCMCIA card allows users to add networking capability to an old laptop or one that does not have an installed, internal network card. The card can turn a useless laptop into a network office machine. PCMCIA refers to the organization that creates the network card standards. PCMCIA cards are now more popularly called "PC Cards." Although most PCMCIA cards are for networking, type I cards are used for memory chips and type III cards are used for external drives. Type II standards are for network cards. PCMCIA cards are thicker than a credit card, but the size and shape are similar to a typical credit card. One end is the connection that inserts into the laptop. The other end has a wire used to attach a network cable, external drive or memory chip. To identify a PCMCIA card, look at the laptop end of the card. This end is a 68-pin connector. Some cards have a gold layer on the top, which is a more advanced type of PCMCIA card.Significance
