Plastic flip-flops are the easiest to wash, and obviously the most resistant to water damage. They can be submerged into a sink or tub and scrubbed with a washcloth or brush. Standard dish soap will work fine; gently scrub away the dirt and rinse. Allow the sandals to dry in the sun. There is little to no risk here, but you should still refrain from vigorously washing the sandals.
The leather sandal is the style that creates most of the controversy. After washing, people have reported that colors have washed away, and that the sandals now stain their feet. Although these cases are extreme, to avoid any possible complications, you should use as little moisture as possible.
Barely moisten a cotton cloth and apply a very small amount of hand soap to it. Gently scrub away dirt and debris, focusing on areas that appear more soiled. Do not scrub vigorously or allow the leather to absorb very much moisture or soap. Rinse the cloth thoroughly, wring it out and barely remoisten it. Wipe away any washed areas to rinse any suds that may have soaked into the leather. Allow the sandals to air dry.
You may also use a toothbrush and a small amount of leather cleaner to refresh the sandal.
Most other types of Rainbow sandals can actually be washed in the washing machine. Use cold water and the most gentle wash cycle available. Do not use a dryer; allow the flip-flops to air dry in the sun.
