UpToDateForPatients.com recommends using digital thermometers based on the fact that they are "inexpensive, widely available, and are the most accurate way to measure temperature," according to "Patient information: Fever in children."
While glass thermometers can be accurate, this is only if they are placed correctly in the mouth. In addition, glass thermometers need to be shaken each time they are used for an accurate reading. Because many still use mercury, a toxic metal, to measure temperature, there is a risk in using glass thermometers that does not exist when using a digital thermometer.
Digital thermometers have a higher chance of being accurate because they do not have as stringent placement and preparation guidelines in order to obtain an accurate reading.
