According to researchers at the University of Guelph, coffee raises the blood sugar levels especially when followed by a carbohydrate meal. The caffeine component of coffee increases the blood sugar levels in normal as well as diabetic individuals. However, in normal healthy people the blood sugar levels return to baseline in couple of hours. Blood sugar rises in diabetic individuals after consumption of coffee which contains caffeine. Caffeine produces insulin resistance and causes a high surge in blood sugar levels. For those who are obese with a sedentary lifestyle, drinking coffee may increase the risk of developing diabetes. Since coffee contains many antioxidants which are important to our body, drinking decaffeinated coffee or limiting the caffeine content in coffee may be a wise decision to prevent diabetes as well as gaining the positive aspects of coffee.
