    Great Answer

    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

On One Hand: An Elliptical Works More Muscles

An elliptical works the upper body and lower body at the same time, allowing more muscles to be used. Pushing and pulling of the arms on the elliptical recruit's muscles in the back, chest and arms, strengthening them. Because using an elliptical places little stress on the lower body, it is a great way for older individuals to get into shape.

On the Other: Treadmills Burn More Calories

According to NutritionData.com, running on a treadmill will burn more calories because of the mechanical work the body undergoes that can't be accomplished on an elliptical. A person trying to loose weight may find more benefits from running on a treadmill.

    Bottom Line

Both a treadmill and an elliptical are beneficial. An elliptical provides a total-body workout, but running on a treadmill will burn more calories. Your goals should determine which piece of equipment is best.
