What is the origin of the phrase to have one's thumb up one's ass?

    Essence

    The male prostate, which can be touched by reaching sufficiently far up the rectum, produces sexual pleasure in some men when massaged. "Having one's thumb up one's ass" referrs to the practice, however akward, of a man masturbating with one hand while attempting to massage his prostate with his opposite thumb.

    It means basically the same thing that "masturbating" does in a colloquial sense ("wasting time, being inefficient"), only harsher.

    I've always associated with the phrase "Sitting on one's hands" indicating a level of inactivity, as one cannot perform dexterous or complex tasks without the use of one's hands. The migration from sitting upon one's hands to having a digit inserted in one's own behind is not too far.

    It probably doesn't involve a donkey, though.
