According to Dr. Russell Turk, obstetrician and founder of the Riverside Obstetrics and Gynecology, applying heat to a specific part of the body is safe during pregnancy. Unlike hot tubs and saunas, a heat pack does not raise a woman's overall body temperature. The Mayo Clinic recommends applying heat to relieve back pain during pregnancy.
Jane Palmer, a midwife writing for Pregnancy, Birth and Beyond, cautions that women should be careful not to burn themselves when applying a hot pack or hot water bottle. Carefully read and follow the manufacturer's instructions. Overheating a heat pack can result in burns.
It is safe for pregnant women to apply a heat pack to sore muscles. Pregnant women should not place a heat pack on their stomachs unless directed by a health care provider. Heat packs do not pose any health risks when they are used properly.
