    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

TV ads might be entertaining or informative, but the primary initiative of most is to convince you to spend money on whatever they are selling. There are two types of commercials, however, with a different objective.

    Sell, Sell, Sell

In her article "The Bribed Soul: Ads, TV, and American Culture," Leslie Savan writes that the average American sees about 100 TV commercials a day. The purpose of all these commercials, as well as all forms of advertising, is to sell products or services.

    How TV Advertising Works

Most television programs are produced by independent production companies that sell their product to the networks. The networks recoup their expenses and make profit by selling airtime to advertisers for spots within these programs.

    Different Types of Commercials

Advertisers have various ways of convincing us to buy products. Some show off the effectiveness of a product or service, some inform us about new products, some make the product look appealing, some connect with us emotionally and some simply make us laugh.

    Public Service Announcements

A small percentage of TV commercial airtime is also devoted to public service announcements, which typically attempt to raise awareness about issues such as drug abuse, domestic violence and cancer screenings for the benefit of the public at large.

    Political Campaigns

Another type of commercial that does not promote a product is the political advertisement. These ads, usually produced by candidates, political parties or political organizations, attempt to persuade us to choose one political candidate over another or to vote for or against an issue up for public election.

The purpose of television commercials is to try to sell consumers products and services they do not need.
