It depends on whether you are talking new or used.

Subaru *in general* have very good reliability. A new car shouldn't cause you any hassle. The only problems you would have would be if you drove it very hard and mistreated it. If you just drove it reasonably, I doubt you'd have a problem.

Second hand WRX's are another matter entirely. While they are very reliable cars by nature, if you buy a second-hand one you risk inheriting a car that has been flogged to death. These cars can have lots of problems with them that are not necessarily from poor manufacturing, but previous misuse.

Things to watch for in used WRX's:
    * Tired engine from being flogged.
    * Turbos - burnt out from misuse and not being allowed to cool down properly after hard running.
    * Clutch - AWD cars are harder on clutches, especially when flogged.
    * Gearbox - Constant hard launches and extreme misuse will break gears or synchros - very expensive to repair.
    * CV joints and diffs - again, these can break under extreme strain.
    * Mechanical damage from people driving them like rally cars.

Also, be very careful that the vehicle hasn't been in an accident.

While this may sound frightening, don't be discouraged: Subarus in general are very reliable cars. It's only people who misuse them that cause the majority of problems. If you're after a brand new one - go for it. In this case I'd steer clear of demonstrators - obviously somebody has driven it, and you never know what they've done.

As for used WRX's, be very vigilant and check everything - get an inspection by a reputable mechanic before you do anything. If you find a well driven model, then go for it. I personally believe that the Impreza is one of the best small to mid-sized car available.
