If I narrow it down as much as possible, my favorite historical period and setting is Europe, North Africa, and western Asia between the death of Alexander the Great and the end of the Second Punic War. I have a general interest in that area from 1000 BC to AD 1000, but that's my favorite part.
At the moment I am reading the last of three books about Genghis Khan in the 13th century, They are based on accounts written close to the time.
I have read books based in Japan and China around the same time,
WW2 and the sweeping changes that took place nearly world-wide after.
The Meiji Restoration
"The Meiji Restoration (明治維新, Meiji Ishin?), also known as the Meiji Ishin, Revolution or Renewal, was a chain of events that led to enormous changes in Japan's political and social structure. It occurred in the latter half of the 19th century, a period that spans both the late Edo period (often called Late Tokugawa shogunate) and the beginning of the Meiji Era."

The Pornocracy (904-964). It was one of the most corrupt periods in Roman and Catholic Church history. One of the many low points of this period was the reign of the teenage Pope John XII. He was a bisexual pervert who eventually was killed by a jealous husband when he returned home to find his wife in the sack with the Pope.
Also interesting is the Cadaver Synod (897). A truly grotesque event.
Read about these little known but extremely interesting periods in history here:

The Renaissance Papacy is interesting, too, especially Pope Alexander VI and his darling children Cesare and Lucretia, and Pope Leo X.

An especially hilarious period of Church history was the three papacies of Benedict IX, who also was a teenager when elected pope. This was probably the all time low point of the papacy, with the Pornocracy and the Renaissance Popes falling not far behind.
