I joined as a sub-editor in a local language newspaper immediately after completing my M.A. in 1973. Those were the days before computers became popular and internet had not become such an integral part of communication.
My job was to go through all the news reports coming through the teleprinters from various news agencies, choose the news stories that will be of interest to our readers and mark them.
Then after the editor approves them I was supposed to translate them into the local language.
I worked this this newspaper for 8 months before I got an employment as a probationary officer in a bank.
I remember what I got paid, but if you do not account for inflation, the figure would appear somewhat small.
All I will say is the pay was more than adequate to cover all my expenses.

I was a bagger. I did not work there for very long, but I made OK money - they were only tips. Sometimes you can make a great amount. My other job was at Busch Gardens as a Caricature artist. You were paid how much you sold, but minimum wage at the least.

I was 14. I worked the two weeks of Christmas Vacation at a local clothing store owned by friends of my parents. All I did all day long was prepare boxes from the knocked-down, flat state to the three-dimensional finished product so the sales people could just grab them pre-made. I don't really remember what I earned but I do know that I was very proud of that job and gave the money I made to my folks as my contribution to the household! :)
