Southwest Airlines, which has been operating as a commercial carrier since 1971, has had no fatal incidents occur on its flights as of March 2010, despite two crashes: one in March 2000, and one in December 2005. In the 2005 incident, one person on the ground was killed as a result of pilot error, but the airline was not found to be at fault. In 2008, the Federal Aviation Administration submitted documents to the government alleging that Southwest Airlines had flown 117 of its aircraft past the due date for their safety inspections--some up to 30 months past the due date--as recently as March 2007. The indiscretion was rectified and Southwest was allowed to continue flying. Southwest Airlines has had no fatal incidents on its flights and is currently in good standing with the FAA. Despite safety inspection violations circa 2007, Southwest is safe.
