Unpasteurized blue cheese may contain listeria, a form of bacteria that can cause the infection listeroisis. While listeriosis poses only a minimal risk to healthy adults, it can cause serious problems for a developing fetus, including stillbirth, miscarriage and preterm birth. The Center for Disease Control recommends that pregnant women avoid all soft cheese products, including feta cheese, Camembert, queso blanco and blue cheese. Mayo Clinic notes that, although unpasteurized blue cheese increases a mother's risk of contracting listeriosis, pasteurized blue cheese does not. Pregnant women should eat blue cheese only if the product label clearly indicates that it was made using pasteurized milk. Blue cheese is also safe for pregnant women if it has been thoroughly cooked; listeria cannot survive high temperatures. Blue cheese and other soft cheese products may contain listeria, a form of bacteria that can cause serious pregnancy complications. However, pregnant women can safely eat blue cheese if it has been pasteurized or cooked. Other possible sources of listeria include Brie, Camembert and feta cheeses. On One Hand: Risk of Listeriosis
On the Other: Pasteurized Blue Cheese Safe
