I'll be on a 5 week trip to Ecuador and need to know what type of luggage to bring. The agency recommends a backpack, since we will be walking on bumpy roads sometimes. I was thinking a backpack with wheels, since I don't want to carry a lot of weight.

Pulling a backpack with wheels on bumpy ground will cause stress to one arm muscle in turn causing problems in the body. The best and easiest way to carry it is with a good fitting rucksack with a stomach strap.

By all means bring one with wheels, but you won't be pulling it along. The country roads will destroy the wheels. Get yourself used to carrying a backpack. You need to have both hands free at all times in a place like Ecuador, where there is a lot of climbing and walking.
