Can you name this clothing item?

What is the name of that little silk item that looks sort of like a present day short dress that women used to wear underneath their clothes and over their stockings during the 1940's-1950's?

I believe it was called a slip. If only the bottom portion was worn it was a half slip. It was also suitable for wear around the house much as men wear their tshirts and boxers. My mother, like most mothers at the time, was comfortable dressed indoors that way so long as there was no company in the house. Slips were commonly worn well into the 1960s until hemlines were hiked up.
