The job description of a criminalist entails working closely with law enforcement and the crime scenes it investigates. Certain academic paths can lead to a career in criminalistics. Criminalists are employed by agencies at all levels. A criminalist falls under the category of a forensic science job function. Scientific methods are applied by criminalists to determine the nature of crimes that may have taken place. The job entails gathering and interpreting evidence found at a crime scene. Crimalists scour crime scenes for items or substances that may be relevant in re-creating the occurrence of a crime. The results of such investigation are interpreted and condensed into a report which may be used in legal proceedings. The criminalist may be asked to testify on behalf of his findings. At a minimum, a criminalist must have a bachelor's degree in a science such as chemistry or biology. Most criminalists hold graduate degrees. Criminalists work with all levels of law enforcement, from local police departments to state agencies, as well as federal agencies such as the FBI and CIA. Criminalists conduct the bulk of their work either gathering data at a crime scene or processing it at the crime lab. According to 2005 data compiled by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, criminalists in federal positions and at superior posts at other levels can earn up to $100,000, though most start out closer to $35,000. Often, the more degrees and credentials a criminalist has, the higher their salary.
