A dog's nose is frequently believed to be an indication of its health. While a dry nose does not necessarily signify illness, moisture loss may indicate an allergy or underlying condition. Because body temperature rises while sleeping, a dog's nose is often warm and dry when it awakes. Some breeds, such as bulldogs, naturally have less moisture on the nose. Changing seasons or unstable weather may affect the moisture on a dog's nose. As the temperature rises, for example, a dog's nose may lose moisture. Dyes in plastic food and water bowls may cause an allergic reaction on the sensitive skin of the nose. Replace plastic bowls with glass or stainless steel. Dog food commonly contains fillers such as wheat or animal byproducts, which can cause skin irritation. Pet specialty stores and veterinarian offices sell a variety of nutritious dog foods that do not contain harmful fillers. Solar dermatosis is caused by excess sun exposure. The skin on a dog's nose may crack or peel, but it returns to normal once the outer layer of skin has peeled off. Because a dog's dry nose may indicate multiple disorders, only a veterinarian can diagnose the condition. If dryness is unrelenting, a biopsy may be required.
