Abercrombie & Fitch is an American clothing and accessory retailer that has been selling casual, informal apparel since the 19th century. Generally located in suburban shopping malls, Abercrombie & Fitch caters to teenage and young adult shoppers. Abercrombie & Fitch, also known as A&F, is marketed as what the company has dubbed a "lifestyle brand." A&F sells garments such as T-shirts, sweaters, sweatshirts and camisoles that are generally casual and comfortable. One of the company's iconic looks of the 21st century has been destroyed denim--premium jeans that have intentionally been ripped up pre-sale. A&F's 2008 net sales totaled $3.48 billion, according to RetailSails. High revenues are attributed to the chain's practice of elevating price points at its targeted college-age crowd, even amid an economic downturn, according to Reuters. Abercrombie & Fitch was started in 1892 by David T. Abercrombie and Ezra Fitch. The initial stores sold sporty clothing suitable for camping and other rugged lifestyles, though it began catering to young adults in the 1990s. Ernest Hemingway was one of the store's earliest customers, according to Hemingway's Library. Advertisements on billboards, posters and the stores' merchandise bags often depict all-natural, scantily clad female models and buff, shirtless male models frolicking together in outdoor or woodsy atmospheres. A&F has also maintained other brands under the company's name, including abercrombie for kids (distinguished by the lower-case "a"), Hollister Co., Gilly Hicks and Ruehl 925, which is now defunct.
