In the world of literature, stories and novels must be told from a certain perspective, with the author choosing which type of perspective, or point of view, from which to tell the story. One of those points of view is known as third person limited. In the third person limited point of view, the narrator tells the story knowing only the thoughts of one specific character, usually the main character. It differs from third person omniscient, in which he expresses the thoughts and feelings of any character he chooses, and third person objective, in which the narrator simply acts as an observer to the proceedings. Third person limited is similar to a first person narrative, only in the first person, the writer might say "I woke up starving and knew I didn't have any food in the house..." In third person limited, it would read, "Tom woke up starving and knew he didn't have any food..." In any type of third person point of view, the actual "narrator" is not a player in the story and is only relating to the reader what is happening, what actions the characters are taking and--in third person limited--sharing what is in the main character's head as well. The limited perspective can be either limited objective or limited omniscient. In limited objective, the reader is merely viewing all the action as it pertains to the main character, and in limited omniscient, the reader is also taken into the thoughts and feelings of that character. A few well-known examples of stories written in the third person limited point of view are James Joyce's "The Dead," Ernest Hemingway's "For Whom the Bell Tolls," J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit" and Franz Kafka's "The Metamorphosis." Writesville: Third Person Point of View Purdue University: Third Person LimitedDefinition
